Meadow View Residence
The owners of this custom home dreamt of creating a house that would integrate with the meadow and woods of their 20-acre property in the agrarian landscape of Orange County. Avid entertainers, they wanted a house to share with family and friends both at large gatherings and for intimate dinners.
On the site’s forested north side, a trellised pedestrian bridge leads from a parking court into the house’s covered front porch. Double doors open to the main living area and expansive south facing windows that reveal stunning views of the rolling meadow. This southern exposure provides generous daylighting for the main living spaces, where carefully positioned awnings keep the interior cool and add texture to the south façade.
The open floor plan easily accommodates large parties, while variations in ceiling height and the placement of windows create spaces that provide a sense of intimacy for quiet gatherings. A contemporary stone tile fireplace anchors the living room. A broad pass-through window between the dining room and kitchen facilitates hosting and maintains spatial connection throughout the main level. The kitchen easily handles two cooks, while keeping conversation flowing as guests linger around the large granite island. Corrugated metal accents blend with appliances and other stainless steel fixtures while echoing exterior metal detailing and the home’s rural North Carolina vernacular. With such a beautiful site, it is no surprise that the homeowners intend to spend much of their time outside. A large screen porch on the southeast corner includes an outdoor kitchen and fireplace. From there, a trellised deck leads to a sunny patio. A second screen porch extends the living room on the southwest side and offers spectacular sunset views.
